In Anthem To Beauty, a documentary covering the making of the American Beauty album, Dead guitarist/vocalist Bob Weir talks about the romance of striking out on the road.
It was recognized by the United States Library of Congress in 1997 as a national treasure.
6. On The Road Again by Willie Nelson
“On the Road Again” is a song written and made famous by American country music singer Willie Nelson in 1980.
The song, about life on tour, came about when the executive producer of the film Honeysuckle Rose approached Nelson about writing the song for the film’s soundtrack.
This song became Nelson’s 9th Country & Western No. 1 hit overall.

10. I’m a Road Hammer by The Road Hammers
The Road Hammers is a Canadian country rock group composed of Jason McCoy, Clayton Bellamy and Chris Byrne.
Their song “I`m a road hammer” became popular after their album release in 2005.

The song tells of a hitchhiker trying to return home from the West Coast.
On the third day of his trip, while at a crossroads in a driving rain, the hitchhiker is picked up by “Big Joe” driving his tractor-trailer named “Phantom 309.”

“Life Is a Highway” is a song by Tom Cochrane from his second studio album, Mad Mad World in 1991.
It was originally conceived in the 1980s as “Love is a Highway”.

It was released in January 1965.
The song refers to the “Haynesville Woods”, an area around the small town of Haynesville in Aroostook County in northern Maine noted for many automobile crashes.
Truck drivers would ship potatoes to market in Boston and a dangerous hairpin turn in the route through Haynesville was the inspiration for the song.

22. Take Me Home, Country Roads by John Denver
It’s a song written by Bill Danoff, Taffy Nivert and John Denver about West Virginia.

In March 2014, it became one of the four official state anthems of West Virginia.
23. Big Wheels In The Moonlight by Dan Seals
“Big Wheels in the Moonlight” is a song co-written and recorded by American country music artist Dan Seals.
It was released in September 1988.
It is about a young man’s childhood memories of watching semitrailer trucks travel along a nearby highway, listening at night to the roar of the trucks’ diesel engines in the distance and dreaming one day of being a truck driver.
The dream never comes to pass, as he begins a family and is working at other jobs, but still finds peace in envisioning the trucks in his mind, the trucks illuminated only by their lights and the moonlight of a clear evening.
24. Paradise City by Guns and Roses
“Paradise City” is a song by the American rock band Guns N’ Roses, featured on their debut album, Appetite for Destruction (1987).
It was released as a single in January 1989.
